Samsung did something incredible with the 970 EVO Plus, offering performance that equals (and even surpasses) the 970 PRO, but without the high cost.

The 970 EVO Plus is based on Samsung’s new 96-layer VNAND memory, and with the series starting at the affordable 256GB version, it is an extremely attractive SSD.

Read and write speeds are 3500MB / s and 3300MB / s respectively. It is fast, but not as fast as a PCIe 4.0 SSD.

Many features of the 970 EVO Plus are similar to Samsung’s other NVMe SSDs, including the 5-year warranty and the durability of the drive.

The only downside to the 970 EVO Plus is the requirement for an M.2 slot, which is something that not everyone might have at their disposal.

The Samsung 870 QVO SSD is a spacious upgrade compared to the old 860 QVO. The drive is available in an impressive 8TB of storage capacity.

It also has much more cache, allowing it to overcome the main disadvantage of the previous model, which was the slow write speed in long-term operations.

Although the speeds are not as impressive as those found even on lower-end NVMe PCIe SSDs, the price per gigabyte of the Samsung 870 QVO is competitive. If you want a lot of storage on an SSD, this is your best option.

The Seagate IronWolf 110 is a Standard SATA SSD, but it is unlike all the other SSDs I have tested. It is the first specifically designed for NAS servers.

Because the servers run 24/7, the main feature of this new SSD is its longevity. It is a business SSD with extremely high durability (the amount of data you can write to it before it reaches its useful life).

Hard drives made for NAS servers – like the Seagate IronWolf or the WD Red – are generally known to be durable but slow.

The Seagate IronWolf 110 SSD breaks this trend; This small drive offers high longevity but still manages to be one of the fastest SATA SSDs on the market.

In response to this, the drive is not the most affordable among entry-level SSDs, costing between 23 and 33 cents per gigabyte in its 240GB, 480GB, 960GB 1.92TB, and 3.84TB capacities.

This is why it is not the one for everyone, but if you want to get the most out of your NAS server, the Seagate IronWolf 110 is a good recommendation, and if not, the fact that it can work with any computer makes this a good option.

With the Crucial BX500, Micron is not trying to impress anyone. However, this new SSD is a total winner thanks to its combination of low price, good performance, and versatile features, especially if you buy the 960GB version.

This drive takes the affordability of SSDs to another level. You can get a new, 960GB one for just $ 130, or 13 cents per gigabyte.

There are also 480GB, 240GB, and 120GB capacities that cost less based on their capabilities. Generally, the Crucial BX500 is between $ 5 and $ 10 cheaper than other entry-level SSDs.

And this comes with no gimmick or fine print. The performance of the drive, while not among the best, is higher than I expected and much faster than any traditional hard drive.

NVMe SSD Configuration: What You Need to Know

Consider what NVMe drives can offer before you buy one. Standard SATA SSDs already speed up computer startup and load times and are much cheaper.

You will get more out of an NVMe drive, whether in M.2 format like the Samsung 980 Pro or in a PCIe drive, if you routinely transfer data, especially in large amounts. If you don’t do this, it’s not worth paying the premium price for an NVMe drive.

If you decide to buy an NVMe SSD, make sure your PC is compatible with it. This is a relatively new technology so you will only find M.2 connections on motherboards from the last few years.

Think primarily AMD Ryzen and Intel chips from the Skylake era onwards. NVMe SSDs mounted on PCIe adapters were popular in the early years of this technology before the M.2 slot implementation was expanded, but it is now less common.

Make sure you can use an NVMe SSD before purchasing one and note that you will need 4 available PCIe lanes to be able to use it to its full potential.

To get the most out of an NVMe drive, you’ll want to run your operating system from it, so you must have a system that recognizes the drive and can boot from it.

Computers purchased for the last one or two years should have no problem booting from an NVMe drive, but support for these can be a bit more difficult on older motherboards.

Google your motherboard and see if it can boot from an NVMe drive. You may need to install a BIOS update for your card. If your hardware can’t boot from an NVMe SSD, your machine should still be able to use it as a secondary drive.

What to look for in an SSD

Capacity and price are important, of course, and a long warranty can ease the fear of premature death of your data. Most SSD manufacturers offer a three-year warranty, and some better models offer a five-year warranty. But unlike the days of yesteryear of SSDs, modern drives will not wear out with normal home use.

The main thing to consider is the technology used to connect the SSD to your PC. We see this in more detail later.

  • SATA: This refers to both the connector type and the transfer protocol, which is used to connect most 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch hard drives and SSDs to your computer. SATA III speeds can go up to roughly 600 Mbps, and most – but not all – modern drives hit this speed (more on this in the next section).
  • PCIe: This interface uses four of your computer’s PCIe lanes to exceed SATA speeds, reaching almost 4 Gbps on PCIe Gen3. These impressive speeds go very well in conjunction with fast NVMe drives. Both the PCIe lanes and the M.2 slot on your motherboard can support the PCIe interface, and you can buy adapters that allow you to plug M.2 drives into a PCIe slot. PCIe 4.0 drives are significantly faster, but require an AMD Ryzen 3000 series CPU with an X570 or B550 motherboard.
  • NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory express): NVMe technology takes advantage of the wide bandwidth of PCIe to create extremely fast SSDs that far outperform SATA drives.
  • M.2: This is where things get a bit confusing. Many people assume that all M.2 drives use NVMe technology and have PCIe speeds, but this is not the case. M.2 is just a physical format. It is true that most M.2 SSDs use NVMe, but some still use the SATA transfer protocol. Do your research, many Ultrabooks use M.2 as storage.
  • U.2 and mSATA: You may come across mSATA and U.2 SSDs, but both motherboard compatibility and product availability are rare in these formats. Some Ultrabooks included mSATA before M.2 became popular, and these types of drives are still available if you need them.

Of course, speed counts, but as we already said, most modern SSDs saturate the SATA III interface, although not all.

If you want speed and storage space, you can buy an SSD with limited space and use it as your startup drive, and then install a traditional hard drive as secondary storage on your computer.
